Welcome to
SOMPTING LODGE
Freemasons Lodge No 8450
Freemasons Lodge No 8450
W.Bro E.Bere and W.Bro D.Bose met quite by chance at a Lodge Meeting at Bognor Regis and although both were residents of Lancing, West Sussex, they were Masters of Lodges some 400 miles apart - namely Littlehampton, West Sussex and Chorley, Lancs. From this happy chance meeting Sompting Lodge was formed.
The original name of the Lodge was to have been 'Seadown' an ancient name for Lancing, as well as being descriptive of the location. However, the R.W.Bro Arthur Jolly knew of the connection of the Knights Templar and the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem with St.Mary's Church, Sompting, and his request that the local Masonic connection be acknowledged could not be ignored or refused.
Thus in 1972 the Sompting Freemasons Lodge 8450 was consecrated and has been a jubilant and thriving Lodge ever since, indeed 2022 will see our 50th Anniversary..
We meet at the Charmandean Centre in Worthing and have regular meetings in January, April, June, September and installation of WM (Worshipful Master) and election of Officers of the Lodge for the proceeding year in November. We hold weekly meetings on a Wednesday evening either on Zoom or at the Lodge itself (which is called LOI's - Lodge of instruction, whereby we meet and practice our craft and have rehearsals for our rituals etc).
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. Its roots lie in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles, that from the end of the fourteenth century regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients.
For Freemasons, there are four important values that help define their path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity.
In today’s world filled with uncertainty, these principles ring as true as they have at any point in the organisation’s history.
Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or any other perceived differences that can divide us as a society.
Regular Freemasonry insists that a volume of scripture be open in a working lodge, that all members profess belief in a Supreme Being, that no women be admitted and that the discussion of religion and politics be banned.
The degrees of Freemasonry retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, Journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason.
Current Worshipful Master, W.Bro Martin Moore.
